For gypsum traffic from Cowangie, ten wagons were converted in 1984. The class was given as VHJA and was numbered 1 to 10.
The conversions were from cut down VHCA wagons whose heritage dated to 1925 as _J__ open hopper wagons.
In 1992/1993, another fifteen wagons were modified from the standard type VHCA wagons. This made the number group 1 to 25.
In the late 1980's, several wagons were noted in briquette traffic.
