These driving trailers coded D were placed into service between 1921 and 1924. There were thirty cars in the group, numbered 1 - 32.
Cars 1 - 13 were recoded from ACD_ 1 - 13 and 14 - 22 recoded ex BCD 1 - 9. D cars 23 - 32 were converted from steam hauled cars _AC_ / _BC_ / ABC_ between 1922 and 1923:
D 23 ex BC 12 D 24 ex ABC 17 D 25 ex ABC 18 D 26 ex ABC 19 D 27 ex ABC 20 D 28 ex AC 5 D 29 ex AC 34 D 30 ex AC 52 D 31 ex AC 63 D 32 ex AC 70
They were progressively scrapped between 1951 and 1974. First car scrapped was D 21 involved in a shunting collision at East Malvern. The body was left beside the line for scrapping after the accident.
Driving trailers were useful in providing two car sets for shuttles on lightly trafficked lines. By 1925, one M-D set was assigned to the hearse train. This "extra" set was grouped into the St Kilda / Port Melbourne running and was removed from this service as required. In preparation for the cemetery run, the M and D were split and the _J__ hearse van placed into the middle. Four hearse vans were fitted with jumper cables and connections for this service.
