SFX
The SFX wagons were built between 1965 and 1970. They feature a flat deck of wood or steel with small bulkheads at each end. The floor has chain pockets. They were numbered 1 to 120. Layouts vary.
In 1978, nine wagons were recoded to SFF_ for dedicated traffic by transport companies. Eight wagons were converted for containerised gas traffic on the standard guage and recoded QGF_.
In 1977, SFX 100 was modified with experimental tarpaulin slide back covers. The wagon type was anticipated for use in Austrailian Paper Mills roll paper traffic. Those wagons were to be the VFNX.
In the 1979 recoding, the SFX wagons were recoded to VFLX.
VFLX
The VFLX wagons were recoded from SFX during the years 1979 to 1984. While the number group for SFX was 1 - 120, the actual VFLX numbers that ran were:
1 - 26, 29 - 36, 38 - 74, 77, 78, 82 - 86, 88, 89, 91, 93 - 95, 97 - 104 107, 110, 112, 120
The missing numbers were due to conversions to other classes prior to 1979.
The only unusual vehicle in the class was VFLX 100, the prototype for the VFNX "praire" wagons. The vehicle saw limited traffic, spent 12 months in storage and was cut down to a VFMX for pineboard traffic.
By the mid 1990's there were only about 20 vehicles in service, the rest converted to container wagons VQLX
