The new Comeng trains were introduced as three car sets. The three car set concept dates from 1978 when the introduction of the underground loop forced a change in the practice of East-West running.
The T cars were introduced between 1981 and 1989.
The T cars are currently numbered 1001 to 1127, 1131 to 1190, 1196 to 1199. Cars 1001 to 1039 were issued to service as T 1 to T 39 before '1000' series numbers was adopted.
Cars into service after this were 1041 to 1127, 1131 - 1190, 1196 - 1199.
Cars 1131, 1132T and 1196 were issued to service as 1067, 1068T and 1085T before being renumbered respectively.
Following a disastrous fire in 1983 that damaged 315 _M__, car 8T was partially damaged and remained at Jolimont Workshops for many years. This became a spare car. Whilst in storage it was used as a parts source and gradually stripped. Only in the late 1980's was the car returned to service numbered as 1008 T.
