In 1987, three VVBP ( ex ZLP_ ) vans converted for use as Way & Works guards vans.
By this date, V/line was in the process of converting trains to two man crewing. This replaced the guard and guards van with an 'End of Train Marker' ( ETM ) and made surplus many train vans.
The class was numbered MD 1, 2 and 3. The vans they were converted from was not known. One modification as noted in the above photo was the fitting of an external ratchet handbrake at one end. The vans had an internal handbrake when in service as VVBP/ZLP.
It seems the three locations they were based were: Ballarat, Bendigo and Shepparton.
Their fate is not known.
