By the 1970's rubbish removal from workshops was being performed by general service wagons. With reductions in the fixed wheel fleet, small capacity wagons ( ie not bogie open wagons ) were hard to organise.
From the late 1970's, special stencilled _IA_ wagons were used to transfer rubbish from Newport Workshops to the Brooklyn ( railway ) Tip. These vehicles were replaced in early the early 1980's by _RY_ wagons which were uncoded at the time. These wagons were later reclassed and renumbered into the _HR_ group. These wagons were very distinctive, being painted a khaki colour.
By 1985 the the HR group was split into various traffic groups and recoded/renumbered.
The class for rubbish traffic was HZR. Wagons HZR 340, 341, 343 were relettered from HR 6, 134 ( 3rd), 141 (2nd) respectively.
HR 6 ( 3rd ) was 'Scrapped' in 1982. Yet HZR 340 is shown as a conversion ex HR 6 in 1985. Which vehicle this 'HR 6' is has not yet been determined.
HZR 346 was converted from HZV 332 during November 1985. Last records show the vehicle placed at Newport Workshops in 1987 and condemned for traffic.
