In 1985 the _HR_ class was split into various groups. Each group was organised by traffic type. The wagons used for transporting traction motors were reclassed to HZM.
The group HZM 220 to 228 were recoded and renumbered from HR 38 (2nd), 43 (2nd), 96 (3rd), 99 (3rd), 110 (3rd), 120 (2nd), 146, 154 (2nd) and 155 (2nd) respectively.
HZM 229 was a new conversion in about 1988, ex _G__ 3736.
It was observed in late 1985 that most of the HZM clas were being used to transport LHB ( Link Hoffman Busch ) bogies.
