New sleeping cars called "Twinettes" were built to replace 1920's stock on the Melbourne to Adelaide train - "The Overland". The cars were uncoded and given Koori ( Aboriginal ) names.
The cars were built and maintained as Joint Stock; Victoria contributing 60% and South Australia 40%, based upon the mileage travelled on the journey.
Six cars were placed into service between 1949 and 1951 and four more 1956/57.
Two cars were sold to VR for internal service in 1972.
The cars are listed below:
Dorai Kuldalai Malkari ( ex Tolkini ) Mokai Nomuldi ( also as "Nomaldi" ) Paiti ( ex Tandeni ) Tandeni ( to Paiti ) Tawarri Tolkini ( to Malkari ) Weroni Yankai Yanni
In about 1984, the remaining ten cars given codes and numbers with the original car names retained. The codes were JTA_ and JTB_.
