IS - Fixed Wheel Scantling Timber Transport

Between 1971 and 1973, the Victorian Railways placed into service some 26' long wagons ( over body ) for scantling timber traffic. These were some 4' longer than standard scanting timber wagons of the time, the _IT_ class.

IS 1 was a standard _IA_ wagon chopped in two and spliced with a 4' centre section. IS 2 to 22 were _KT_ wagons cut and lengthened by 4'.

Traffic for these vehicles was between Orbost and timber distribution points in the Melbourne Metro area. Occassionally timber was railed from Orbost to other Victorian country locations.

The IS wagons were removed from service from 1977 to the mid 1980's.
