Between 1881 and 1886, the Williamstown Workshops built some boxvans coded T. Perhaps more were built but by 1886 only numbers 1 - 19 were in service. The 1886 data shows number 1 built 1881, 2-4 built 1882, 5-8 built 1883, 9 built 1884, 10 built 1885, 11 - 19 built 1886.
Most of the vans were fitted with Westinghouse train pipe only between 1889 and 1892.
Vans 6, 7, 8 and 16 were fitted with "roofing bars for meat" in 1887.
Vans 14 and 15 are mentioned in the "Registers" as being fitted with "side springs" in about 1887; a reference to unknown modifications at this point in time.
Note: The information contained had been transcribed from older books into the new combined "Registers" of 1886. Thus we do not know whether there were numbers in the class higher than number 19, which is an unusual number of vans to build. Vehicles scrapped or converted prior to 1886 were not transcribed.
With the introduction of the new insulated vans in 1894 with code _T__, the existing T vans were recoded to TH.
These were fitted with Westinghouse brakes during 1909 and 1910.
The class was progressively removed from service between 1910 and 1923. The last van scrapped was TH 11 on 20/12/1923.
