The Spirit of Progress was transferred to standard gauge running during 1962. The classes allocated in broad gauge running were unsuitable for joint VIC/NSW running. Codes adopted were NSW carriage codings with 'V' prefix. The two brakevans were VHN 1 and 2.
VHN 1 ex _CS_ 1 and VHN 2 ex CS 2 ( _DS_ 1 ).
In 1982 a rear end collision damaged van VHN 2 and was scrapped about 12 months later.
VHN 1 was transferred to broad gauge when the overnight train stopped running. It was renumbered to 241. It has been refurbished as the V/line test car.
The car became _CS_ 241 in the early 1990's.
