In 1978, sixty wagons were built for container traffic service. They were of similar design to the FQX_ design but was of skeletal design, not a flat deck type. The numbers were 1 to 60.
The code was such that with eventual change to a national system, the letter 'V' could be added to give a four letter designation 'VQMX'. However by 1979, the adopted letters were different. In the 1979 recoding the class was relettered to VQFX.
Seventy five more wagons were built in 1980. These were VQFX 61 - 135.
About 1985, many of the class had been recoded to VQFY, reason not known. From the conversions it seems the group 61 to 135 were done.
To set up the National Rail Corporation (NRC), each state system contributed rolling stock. The VQFX/VQFY wagons were recoded to RQFX from 1994. The vehicles remained the property of Victoria however.
With NRC buying new container wagons ( 'Five packs' etc ) these RQFX will eventually return to their old codes when handed back.
