To complement the _AV_ and _BV_ passenger cars built in the late 1890's, two passenger guards vans of similar design were built.
The vans featured guards compartments at each end with a large baggage area in the centre. Van 1 featured 'duckets'; small side extentions that permitted inspection along the side of the train through narrow windows.
The vans, coded DV 1 and 2 were built in 1898. Five more vans, numbers 3 - 7, were built in 1906.
In the 1910 recoding the class was altered to CV, numbers unchanged.
These vans remained in service until replaced in the 1980's by steel passenger cars and altered train running.
