QR wagons were introduced from 1889. They featured removable drop doors. The unusual code seems to have come from the combination of Q=flat wagon and R=medium size open wagon. Blocks of construction proceeded through to 1930.
Capacity varied from 26 - 30 tons, depending upon the bogies fitted. "Diamond frame" bogies were 26 ton capacity with all others ( barframe, plateframe, cast ) rated at 30 tons.
As built the wagons featured trussbars. The trussbars were removed when the wagons received centre sills for the auto-coupler project in the 1930's.
Number group was 1 - 407.
There were two main types of QR: three door ( per side ) and four door. The three door type were numbered 1 - 376, 407 with four door numbers being 377 - 406. QR 407 was built from spare parts left for reconstruction of another QR in Way and Works service and is a three door type.
The QR wagons were recoded to VOWA in the 1979 recoding project.
