RM - AEC Railcar

To provide service and reduce costs in the 1920's, the VR began placing into service petrol engined railcars. The first of these were the AEC railmotors.

The class was given as RM and the numbers were 1 to 19. They were placed into service between 1922 and 1925.

With the advent of better railcars placed into service in the late 1940's, these cars were removed from service between 1948 and 1956.

RM 1 was fitted with a diesel engine about 1951. It was scrapped in 1953.

RM 18 was placed 'Off Register' in 1949. About 1950 it was 'reconditioned' and placed back into service. It was scrapped October 1951.

RM 11 was a most unusual vehicle and disappeared in unusual circumstances. It was not found in the 1942 Stocktake and removed from records. The only explanation the author can imagine is that the vehicle ended up cannibalised to support the others. In the process, the identity was lost.
