The PHN class were Joint Stock owned by New South Wales and Victoria. They were steel flute sided vans for the standard gauge passenger trains that ran between Sydney and Melbourne.
PHN 2361, 2362 and 2363 were built 1961/1962 for operation initially on the 'Southern Aurora'.
PHN 2369, 2370 and 2371 were built 1962 for operation initially on the 'Spirit of Progress'.
PHN 2370 was destroyed in the Violet Town collision in 1969. This van was replaced by PHN 2381 built in 1970.
Between 1981 and 1982, PHN 2362 and 2363 were renumbered to 2862 and 2863 respectively.
