A new double deck train set was built in 1991 for the Melbourne suburban service. The four car set was built in December 1991 and transferred to Melbourne from New South Wales. It entered service in March 1992.
The set consited of two control cars coded T, numbers 6000 and 6002 and two motor non control cars coded _M__.
