In late 1984 a _GY_ wagon was drastically modified to a manual discharge sleeper transport.
The vehicle featured open sides which allowed gangers to slide the sleepers out to drop them beside the line. The sleepers (ties) were loaded transversely to allow this side discharge.
Probably this was a test, as similar type of arrangements can be found with other railways overseas.
Fate of the vehicle is not known. Most four wheel wagons were out of service by the mid 1990's.
The vehicle was built as GY 308 in May 1941. The records show that it was issued to traffic during October 1984. However the vehicle was photographed in the paint shop at Newport Workshops in November unpainted and without lettering.
After issue to service several modification were made to the design.
It appears to be the pre-cursor of the manual discharge bogie vehicles classed VZTX.
