Steam railcars were first introduced to Victoria in 1883 by the Rowan rail cars. In 1913 the railways placed into service another steam rail car.
The motive power components were purchased from Kerr, Stewart of England and the body was built at Newport Workshops. Thee body was built to an English design as similar cars were introduced on "Great Western" in the same era. Hence the writer has always known this vehicles as the "Great Western" car. In the official photo the car is lettered "Motor Car 3".
The vehicle ran in troubled service until the 1920's, when it was placed in storage and finally scrapped in 1927.
