In 1938 the dining car Wimmera was modified for departmental use as a Medical car. The car entered service during October 1938 lettered 'Medical & Vision Test Car'. It was fitted with transition hook gear.
The car travelled throughout the Victorian rail network on a regular basis. For employees engaged in safeworking it was necessary for them to be regularly examined. The car enabled staff to be checked without travelling to Melbourne for inspection by the railway doctor.
In 1955 the car was fitted with auto couplers.
It was once suggested in the 1960s that a 102hp Walkers railcar be used to replace this vehicle. The idea was not considered practical as the railcar was smaller and could fit the equipment.
